Fall sports are here! šŸˆāš½šŸ Whether your child is joining a school team, recreational league, or another athletic program, they may need a sports physical before they can participate.

A sports physical helps make sure young athletes are ready to safely take part in physical activity and can identify potential health concerns before the season gets underway.

What Is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, also called a preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE), is an exam that helps determine whether an athlete can safely participate in a sport.

During the visit, a healthcare provider will typically review your child’s medical history and perform a physical exam.

What Happens During a Sports Physical?

Your provider may check things such as:

  • Height and weight

  • Blood pressure and heart rate

  • Heart and lungs

  • Vision

  • Joints, muscles, strength, and flexibility

  • Previous injuries

  • Medical conditions and medications

  • Family medical history

This is also a good opportunity to mention any symptoms your child has experienced during exercise, such as dizziness, chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, or fainting.

Why Are Sports Physicals Important?

Sports physicals aren’t just another form to complete before the season starts. They can help identify health or injury concerns that could affect an athlete during physical activity.

If a concern is found, the provider can discuss whether additional evaluation, treatment, or precautions may be needed before participation.

What Should You Bring?

To help make the visit easier, parents should bring:

  • Any sports physical forms required by the school or organization

  • A list of current medications

  • Information about previous injuries or medical conditions

  • Relevant family medical history

  • Glasses or contacts, if your child wears them

Be sure to complete any parent or athlete sections of the paperwork before your visit when possible.

Get Ready for the Season

Don’t wait until the first practice to find out your child needs a physical. Getting it taken care of early can help make the start of the sports season a little easier.
