A sore throat is one of those symptoms that can seem minor at first. Sometimes it’s caused by a common cold or irritation and improves on its own. Other times, it may be a sign of strep throat or another illness that needs medical attention.

As cold and flu season approaches, knowing what symptoms to watch for can help you Sore Throat or Strep? When It’s Time to Get Checkeddecide when it’s time to get checked.

What Can Cause a Sore Throat?

Sore throats can have many causes, including:

  • Common colds and other viruses

  • Strep throat

  • Flu

  • Allergies

  • Postnasal drip

  • Dry air or irritation

Because several illnesses can cause similar symptoms, it isn't always possible to tell what's causing a sore throat based on symptoms alone.

Could It Be Strep Throat?

Strep throat is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Symptoms can include:

  • A sore throat that begins quickly

  • Pain when swallowing

  • Fever

  • Red or swollen tonsils

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

  • Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth

Some people may also develop white patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils. Symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, and hoarseness are more commonly associated with viral illnesses than strep throat.

When Should You Get Checked?

Consider seeing a healthcare provider if your sore throat is severe, isn't improving, or is accompanied by symptoms such as:

  • Fever

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Swollen glands

  • Rash

  • White patches on the tonsils

  • Symptoms that are getting worse instead of better

A healthcare provider can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether testing for strep or another illness may be appropriate.

Why Testing Matters

Not every sore throat needs antibiotics. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections such as strep throat, but they don't work against viruses.

If strep throat is suspected, testing can help determine the cause and whether antibiotic treatment is needed.

Don't Let a Sore Throat Keep You Guessing

With school back in session and fall illnesses beginning to circulate, sore throats are bound to happen. If you or your child develops symptoms that aren't improving or you're concerned it could be strep, Roswell Family Care can help determine what's going on and recommend the appropriate next steps.
